BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Monica Academy 56, Shandon 44: The Crusaders made a 185-mile road trip Friday and came away with a CIF Southern Section Division V-A second-round victory.

Fourth-seeded St. Monica (20-4) received 19 points, eight rebounds and six blocks from Peter Ford, 12 points and seven rebounds from Charlie Boles and 10 points from Francis Mireles.

“[It was a] close game and we pulled away in the fourth quarter,” St. Monica coach Peter Grimm said. “We went to a three-guard offense with Sam Gutierrez, Francis Mireles and Ernie Grimm and that provided the ball-handling and spacing that helped take the lead and pull away.”

St. Monica will meet visiting Tarbut V’Torah in a quarterfinal contest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Revelation Baptist Church in Pasadena.
