Washington, D.C. Trip

courtScaliamonitcelloshrineDuring the week of March 19-25, 2014, our juniors and seniors traveled to Washington, D.C. to visit our nation’s historic sites. The following is a brief itinerary of their trip:

Day 1, Thursday March 20th
Korean War Memorial, a moving portrayal of American soldiers in Korea out on a night patrol.
Vietnam War Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
Tour of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, where our money is printed.
Smithsonian Museums: Air and Space, American History, Natural History, National Gallery of Art
National Archives

Day 2, Friday March 21st
Ford’s Theater, where President Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865.
Peterson House, where Lincoln was carried after the shooting and died.
U.S. Capitol, House of Representatives
Arlington National Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; four of our students participated in laying a wreath: Arthur Halpin, Anna McCall, Anna Goodwin, and JohnPaul Talbot.

Day 3, Saturday March 22nd
Monticello, the only home of a U.S. President that has been designated a World Heritage Site

Day 4, Sunday March 23rd
Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception; our students Thomas Boles, Serena Lessard, Pablo Freymann, and Karina Melin took up the gifts in the offertory procession.
Guided tour of the National Shrine
Tomb of George and Martha Washington; our group sang the National Anthem in four-part harmony, and the crowd of bystanders erupted in applause.

Day 5, Monday March 24th U.S. Supreme Court; our students were able to witness an actual case being discussed.
Library of Congress
Conference and meeting with Justice Antonin Scalia. The two major points that he focused on in his brief remarks were the importance of the structure of the Constitution in protecting and maintaining freedom, and the importance of local and state courts.

Day 6, Tuesday March 25th
Tour of Gettysburg. (The kids were treated to a light dusting of snow.)
Return flight to LAX
